Making Future Magic: light painting with the iPad

The creative communication agency Dentsu London wanted to explore how the media landscape is changing by exploring how surfaces and screens look and work in the world. To their help they collaborated with design consultancy BERG to visualize the aesthetic interpretation of those ideas.

For this concept BERG found a playful use of the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world. So for this particular film they invented a technique to light paint using long camera exposures to record an iPad moving through space in order to make a stop motion film of 3-d light forms.

The project aimed to expand the value of the commercial communications by approaching things with priorities to make creative work that is contributory and sensible to its culture and environment; to be exploratory and sensitive with regard to materials and media; to wonder what magical visions (as opposed to the familiar dystopias) of the future of media might look like.
