Fire Writer

23. Mai 2013 - 18:04 Uhr

FireWriter is a graphical production tool built with Processing & Wiring. The hardware consists of a hacked inkjet printer controlled with an Arduino Uno, a Dremel torch loaded with a butane/propane mix that burns up to a temperature of 1200C, and an added calibration module built with an optical sensor. It works on various types of supports such as wood, paper, walls, plastic, fabric and many others. The duration, strength and precision of the flame can be controlled in real-time manually with a pitch.
A black & white image first has to be fed into the Processing script, which dynamically writes a Wiring code that can then be compiled and sent onto the Arduino board. The printer then burns dot by dot (pixel per pixel) on the horizontal axis. The machine is equipped with step by step wheels that enable the user to lower the printer one line at a time on the vertical axis on any support.

A Chandelier that Projects Tree Shadows

16. Mai 2013 - 15:54 Uhr

A chandelier that projects tree shadows!!! A CHANDELIER THAT PROJECTS… Ok, I’ll stop with this 😀

Unfortunately only a concept named Forms in Nature from danish Hilden & Diaz.

„The forest is mirrored around it’s horizontal central axis and forms a circle 360 degrees around the light source and thereby leads one onto the notion of a real world versus an underworld.“

„Interestingly, the roots are those elements of the forest that are the most visible. Thereby the sculpture is not only mirrored, but also turned upside down in Hilden & Diaz’ artwork. As the intensity of the light source increases, the room changes and the space slowly becomes more and more fascinating and unheimlich.“

Could become a Kickstarter project if enough people write emails!

Do Not Touch

2. Mai 2013 - 15:49 Uhr

It’s hard to rock out with a mouse. Or at least it used to be, before Do Not Touch, an interactive music video for the song Kilo by Light Light.

When you load the site, you’re greeted by thousands of cursors. What are they doing? Well it ends up that the site records the position of your cursor through the song. So these are the ghosts of those who’ve gone before you who will serve as your companions on your journey through the song.

You would think the gimmick would get old after 10 seconds, but it doesn’t, thanks to evolving challenges. The video becomes a game asking you to do everything from follow a maze of green tracks to forming the mass cursor-silhouette of a boxer. And all the while, you get to see the exact paths that the hivemind took–along with all of the obvious, sharp deviations that those of us who consider ourselves independent thinkers insist upon taking.

(Just wait until you reach the stage “do not touch the model.”)
