Jonty Hurwitz

25. Januar 2013 - 10:34 Uhr

Jonty Hurwitz makes skewed, anamorphic sculptures and engineered illusions. He begins with about a billion computer calculations before spending months considering how to materialize his warped ideas using perspex, steel, resin or copper. The anamorphic sculptures rely on scans of objects (hands, faces, frogs) that are then distorted digitally and fabricated, but when placed in front of a cylindrical mirror the projected reflection reveals the original object. The artwork is his way to “express calculations visually”.

Other works deal with pixelated or sliced human forms that are only viewable from a single perspective.

Intelligent contact lenses

22. Januar 2013 - 11:43 Uhr

Different companies are working on the development of „intelligent contact lenses“ that will be able to support us with varous functions in the near future.
One of these companies is ST-Microelectronics, who has already developed a wireless MEMS-sensor call „Sensimed Triggerfish“ that is capable of constantly measuring the intraocular pressure. This precisely long-term measuring enables the doctor to detect a too high intraocular pressure earlier and set up a much more accuarate therapy.

Another company, who thinks of intelligent contact lenses as an appropiate technology is Google. Google works on a contact lens that is capable to function as a monitor, projecting pictures directly to your eye. This project seems to be the next step in  the distant future development of the already existing Google Glass project.

The world’s first cloud speaker

18. Januar 2013 - 07:47 Uhr

OD-11 was originally developed in 1974 by swedish engineer Stig Carlsson, and had its „revival“ at the 2013 CES in las vegas, by stockholm-based studio Teenage Engineering. They implemented a feature that references the recurring theme of ‚the internet of things‘ -fully integrated cloud connectivity.

Equipped with an articulated amplifier that delivers 100W, a subwoofer and tweeter, wi-fi capabilities and a sound processor, the device delivers both great sound and user experience.

The Speaker is controlled through the magnetic ‚ortho volume remote‘ with wireless communication built around a bluetooth 4.0 low energy chip, allowing it to run for years on a single button cell battery!

Audi lighting technologies

17. Januar 2013 - 18:00 Uhr

Audi has been working in new lighting technologies for some years. They were pioneers in LED technology for headlights and they are -almost- the only company which has full LED front headlights. Now they are developing new OLED lighting systems, apart from laser light indicators and some other cool stuff and they showed them in the CES 2013. These new technologies  increase road safety and let designers be more creative in light design. There is an article and some cool videos about them:

Fresh presented from the CES 2013 show, these e-Paper Tablets have been developed by Quenn’s university, Plastic Logic and Intel Labs. Very interesting way to use flexibility as an interaction element.
