Well guided – innovative service concept

30. Januar 2014 - 09:46 Uhr

Boarding information at 64 x 30.000 pixels

Rush hour at the train station: Where will the train stop? Where can I find an empty seat? Where can I board with my bike?
Goal of this implemented idea was to make the entry situation for the passengers easier. Therefor a 180 meter LED-Display has been located right above the platform. It provides information about the incoming train. The Screeninformation moves parallel to the train and shows exactly were an empty seat can be found, where class 1 or 2 are located, where one can entry the train easily by wheelchair.
It improves the transfer process: from communicating platforms to mobile travel assistants to new communication concepts preparing passengers for incoming trains.
So far this Project (from ProRail – together with NS Dutch Railways) is being installed only at the Amsterdam Station „Hertogenbosch“.
However, everybody who uses the train frequently would love this simple solution.

Gene Designer

22. Januar 2014 - 17:05 Uhr

Plants which are glowing in the dark could soon be a natural alternative for electric lighting and be represented in every household.

The kickstarter project “glowing plant project” is working with scientists on the goal to integrate the genes of fireflies into plants to great a self illumination effect. The funding goal with 50.000 $ is already reached and they have got almost 500.000 $ through the kickstarter campaign.

After a few years of work they have got the first results of glowing plants. The current photos are taken with a long time exposure but they give a great view of the possibilities for gene-designer in the future.

New developments in 3D-printing

12. Dezember 2013 - 13:15 Uhr

We all know 3D-printers. We use them every day for rapid prototyping of our design concepts every day. But this technology develops quite fast and so there many more things you could do with a 3D-printer. From printing food to printing human organs – nearly everything seems to be possible today or at least in the near future.

Here some examples:

Printed cookies

The Sugar Lab in Los Angeles uses sugar to create 3D printed cake-toppers. And at the Cornell University, researchers are experimenting with creating shaped candies and 3D-printed cakes.

Printed fashion

The world’s first ready-to-wear 3D-printed bikini. Sold by Continuum Fashion, the bikini is made of 3D-printed circular plates of nylon connected by thin springs.

Printed human tissue

The development is still in a very early stage, but scientists have developed a 3D-printer for stem cells.

The device works by creating uniform droplets of living embryonic stem cells, which are the cells present in early development that are capable of differentiating into any type of tissue. The printer is so gentle that it can squirt out as few as five cells at a time without damaging them. Researchers can use the dabs of cells to rapidly test drugs or to build miniature scraps of tissue. The eventual goal is to grow whole organs from scratch.

The Beauty of Mathematics

4. Dezember 2013 - 14:44 Uhr

Could also be called „The Beauty of Video“ :) A very nice visualization of math behind everyday things like coffee, trees and snowflakes through a triptych format. We see the object in the right frame, a mathematical model in the center and equations on the left.

“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty – a beauty cold and austere, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music.” Bertrand Russell
